“My goal in painting is to paint with enough realism to portray the moment but abstract enough to invite the viewer to interpret.”
About Terri J Rice
I have been painting for decades and decades. I love painting so much that I wake up in the night and think about composition and color mixing. And sometimes while I wait for the coffee to finish brewing, I run up to my studio and do a little painting in my pj’s. The beauty all around, just by stepping outside, continues to be a favorite subject. And then step out 5 minutes later and it will all have changed. The Golden Hour, just before the sun goes down, is truly golden.
The Process
I used to paint exclusively in watercolor, but I am now so drawn to the intensity and the permanence of oil paint that I call both my favorite. My skyscapes and landscapes are exclusively oil. I like the slow-drying nature of oil paint that allows me to come back, even the next day, to blend in a new color or soften a line. The trouble with oils is the cleanup, but even that has become, for me, a ritualistic contemplation as I rub the bristles between my fingers coaxing the color out of the brush and then rinsing the brush in warm water. And just because I want to make sure the brush is truly clean, I swirl the wet brush in a bar of leftover soap from a hotel stay.
My watercolors tend to be careful and vibrant. I am always thrilled with the way the colors float and blend together on the paper.
