Evocative detail of the natural world
I'm a PhD chemist by formal training; ask me about the biophysical chemistry of intracellular self-assembly and I'll yabber on until your eyes have long since glazed over. I've also been an academic editor, a science news writer, and a chemistry teacher. In late 2021, I started to take my artistic development seriously to see how far it would take me. Since then, I've exhibited my artwork at local, regional, and statewide businesses and competitions in Washington state. I've also taught art to local pre-teens and teens in the Tri-Cities area.
“When artists commonly assume that some effect is unachievable by using graphite pencils, I'm driven to figure out how I might get it to work anyway. Whether the end result is by a process that takes me only a minute or 100 hours per illustration, I appreciate the journey and expanding what's possible with some of the most basic artistic tools.”
The Process
I mainly work in graphite pencil to capture the intelligence, curiosity, and beauty of the natural world. My stippling style is sufficiently subtle yet precise to clearly delineate mixed gray / blond hair, in grayscale. I also have a loose approach to precisely illustrating complex animal fur and evocative atmospheric effects.
